Cold Wave Grips Jammu and Kashmir; Yellow Alert Issued by MeT
Srinagar: The Meteorological Department in Jammu and Kashmir has issued a yellow alert for isolated areas, forecasting a cold wave expected to persist from December 17 to December 23. With no major weather activity predicted until December 26, the warning has raised concerns over the intensifying winter chill across the region.
Yellow Alert for Cold Wave
The MeT department cautioned that both the Jammu and Kashmir regions would experience cold wave conditions at isolated locations throughout the week. Residents have been advised to prepare for the deepening cold, particularly during the night hours.
Plummeting Temperatures in Kashmir
Kashmir has already begun to witness an intensification of the cold spell, with temperatures dropping significantly across key locations:
Srinagar: The summer capital recorded a chilling -5.3°C, a steep decline from the previous night’s -3.4°C.
Gulmarg: The renowned ski resort registered a minimum temperature of -4.0°C.
Pahalgam: Known for its scenic beauty, Pahalgam recorded the lowest temperature at -6.8°C.
Tourists and Frozen Wonders
The harsh weather has not dampened the spirits of tourists flocking to the region. In Tangmarg, a frozen waterfall at Drung has become a major attraction, drawing visitors eager to capture the unique sight.
Precautions Advised
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to take necessary precautions, especially during early mornings and late nights when temperatures are expected to be at their lowest. The MeT department has also recommended wearing adequate layers and ensuring safe heating practices to combat the cold.
With the cold wave tightening its grip, Jammu and Kashmir are bracing for one of the harshest phases of winter, signaling the onset of the chilling “Chillai Kalan” period starting later this month.
