Kashmir Gears Up for CChillai-Kalan Begins Tonight as Kashmir Braces for Cold Wave and Light Snowfall

Srinagar, Dec 21: The 40-day harshest winter period, locally known as Chillai-Kalan, is set to begin from the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, bringing with it intense cold and the possibility of light snowfall over higher reaches in north Kashmir. This period, marked by freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall, is a defining feature of Kashmir’s winter and has a profound impact on daily life in the region.

According to meteorological officials, Chillai-Kalan begins on December 21 and extends until January 31. It will be followed by a 20-day phase called Chillai-Khurd (small cold) from January 31 to February 19 and then by Chillai-Bachha (baby cold) from February 20 to March 2. These phases, though progressively less severe, continue to keep the valley in a cold grip.

The name Chillai-Kalan is derived from Persian, meaning “Major Cold,” and reflects the period’s severity. It is during this time that the valley often witnesses sub-zero temperatures, freezing water bodies, and snow-covered landscapes.

Cold Wave Intensifies

Even before the official start of Chillai-Kalan, the cold wave has firmly gripped Kashmir, with all areas across the valley recording below-normal temperatures. Frosty mornings and freezing nights have become the norm, with residents preparing for even harsher conditions in the coming weeks.

Light snowfall is predicted in some higher reaches of north Kashmir, adding to the wintry charm while also signaling the onset of tougher weather. These conditions are expected to disrupt normal life, especially in rural and mountainous areas where accessibility becomes a challenge.

Winter Traditions and Resilience

For the people of Kashmir, Chillai-Kalan is not just a climatic phenomenon but also a cultural period. Families huddle around traditional heating devices like kangris (portable firepots) and prepare special winter delicacies such as harissa, a meat-based dish that provides warmth.

Despite the freezing conditions, this time is often celebrated for its unique beauty, as snow blankets the valley, creating a picturesque landscape that attracts tourists and photographers.

Advisory for Residents

Authorities have advised residents to take precautions during the harsh weather, including wearing adequate winter clothing and ensuring proper insulation in homes. Travelers are urged to check weather updates regularly, as snowfall and icy roads could lead to disruptions in transport.

As Chillai-Kalan commences, the valley braces for its annual dance with nature’s most frigid embrace, a reminder of both the challenges and the resilience of life in Kashmir.
