Srinagar records coldest Dec night in over three decades as Chillai-Kalan arrives in Kashmir

Kashmir Valley Shivers as Chillai-Kalan Brings Record-Breaking Cold Wav

Srinagar, Dec 21: The Kashmir Valley is currently in the grip of its harshest winter phase, locally known as Chillai-Kalan. The 40-day period, infamous for its biting cold and freezing temperatures, has plunged the region into a severe cold wave, with temperatures plummeting to historic lows.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded its coldest December night in over three decades, with the mercury dipping to a bone-chilling -8.5°C. This marks the lowest temperature for December in the city since 1990. According to meteorological records, the all-time lowest temperature for Srinagar was -12.8°C, recorded on December 13, 1934.

“At -8.5°C, Srinagar has recorded its coldest December night since 1990,” an official stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “The valley is witnessing extreme cold conditions this winter.”

The cold wave has extended its icy grip across South Kashmir, with several districts experiencing even harsher conditions. Shopian recorded a frigid -10.4°C, while Anantnag experienced a bone-numbing -10.5°C, marking the lowest temperatures in the valley. Pulwama was not far behind, with the mercury settling at -10.3°C, and Kulgam recorded a low of -6.8°C.

The ongoing Chillai-Kalan, known for intensifying cold and freezing water bodies, will last until January 31, followed by Chilla-Bacha (baby cold) from February 1 to March 2. During this period, sub-zero temperatures are expected to persist, with locals relying on traditional heating systems and warm clothing to combat the extreme weather.

The icy conditions have also led to frozen water pipes and frost-covered roads, disrupting daily life. However, despite the challenges, many residents view Chillai-Kalan as an integral part of Kashmiri tradition, celebrated with special dishes, rituals, and folklore.

Experts are advising caution, urging people to stay indoors during the coldest hours and take necessary measures to protect against frostbite and hypothermia. The meteorological department has predicted no immediate respite, with temperatures likely to remain below freezing in the coming days.

As Chillai-Kalan continues to tighten its grip, the Kashmir Valley braves yet another winter, its beauty and resilience undiminished even in the face of such extreme weather.
