Erratic Weather Ahead for Jammu and Kashmir, MeT Predicts Light Snowfall

SRINAGAR, December 24: The Meteorological Department (MeT) has predicted erratic weather conditions for Jammu and Kashmir over the next two weeks, with occasional light snowfall expected over higher reaches of the region. While no major wet spells are on the horizon, the MeT has advised caution due to sub-freezing temperatures and icy conditions in certain areas.
According to the MeT, the weather is likely to remain generally dry over the next three days. From the afternoon of December 27 to the morning of December 28, light rain is expected in the plains of Jammu, with light snow forecasted for higher elevations of the Chenab Valley and the Pir Panjal Range.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, stated that December 29 is expected to see dry conditions across the region. On New Year’s Eve, December 31, the weather may turn cloudy, with light snowfall possible at isolated higher-altitude locations. From January 1 to January 3, the region could experience generally cloudy skies with scattered light snow in some areas.
The MeT also issued an advisory predicting a 2–3°C drop in minimum temperatures between December 23 and 26. The cold wave conditions are expected to persist at isolated locations, adding to the challenges posed by freezing nighttime temperatures.
With recent snowfall and sub-zero temperatures causing icy road conditions, especially on key passes and higher altitudes, the department has urged tourists, travelers, and transport operators to heed administration and traffic advisories.
Despite the chill, night temperatures across the Valley have shown improvement, bringing slight relief to residents. However, the fluctuating weather patterns are likely to keep locals and visitors on alert through the New Year.
As the region braces for colder days ahead, authorities continue to monitor weather conditions to ensure the safety and convenience of residents and travelers.
