Cold Wave Grips North India: IMD Warns of Severe Weather Ahead

BY: SUJJAD REHMAN

North India is reeling under a severe cold wave, with biting cold affecting the plains and heavy snowfall blanketing the mountains. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for several regions, signaling challenging weather conditions in the coming days.

Delhi Sees Brief Respite Amid Foggy Conditions

Delhi experienced light rainfall on Friday and Saturday, leading to a slightly clearer Sunday. However, dense fog enveloped the city in the morning, reducing visibility and adding to the winter chill. The IMD reported a minimum temperature of 9°C and has forecasted cold wave conditions to persist.

Weather Updates Across Other States

Uttar Pradesh: The IMD predicts clear weather for the next two days, but dense fog and severe cold waves may follow in parts of the state.

Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan: December 29 is expected to bring chilly conditions to both states, with Himachal Pradesh bracing for an intensified cold wave on December 30 and 31.

Punjab and Haryana: These regions are witnessing consecutive days of rainfall, disrupting normalcy. In Rajasthan, Jhalawar district recorded significant rainfall of 86 mm, accompanied by hailstorms in some eastern areas.

Jammu and Kashmir: A noticeable dip in temperatures is anticipated, further intensifying the winter chill.

Uttarakhand: Snowfall Brings Beauty and Chaos

Uttarakhand’s mountainous regions, including popular destinations like Auli, Hemkund Sahib, and Chopta, are blanketed with fresh snow. The cold wave has disrupted life in the state, blocking major highways such as Badrinath and Joshimath-Niti roads. Continuous snowfall and rain have also led to power outages in several villages, compounding the difficulties for locals.

IMD’s Advisory

The IMD has urged people across northwestern and central India to prepare for worsening weather. Dense fog, further temperature drops, and severe cold waves are anticipated in the coming days. Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys, especially in hilly areas prone to roadblocks due to snow and rain.

As the year ends, the harsh winter conditions serve as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather, emphasizing the importance of timely preparedness and caution.
