The current election system : India’s current election system involves multiple elections being conducted throughout the year.
Including Lok Saba, State assemblies and local body elections. This system requires substantial time,resources and efforts. For instance, schools are often closed repeatedly to facilitate voting government employees are deployed on election duties multiple times,and security forces are called upon to ensure free and fair elections.
As a result, the process becomes lengthy and disruptive for regular governance and the economy.
Understanding One Nation One Election :the notion of one nation one election, One Election proposes concurrent elections for Lok Saba and state assemblies, conducting on a single day.
This notion aims to streamine the electoral process make it more Proficient. This system proposes that voters across the nation cast their votes on a single day or within a specified timeframe.
Benifits of One Nation One Election
Cost Efficiency:Simultaneous elections would notably reduce the financial outlay associated with repeated election process. At this time, elections require substantial funds for distribution, defense provisions, administrative assistance.By conducting elections once every five years, the government can direct the funds to development initiatives.
Voter Participation Increased : A single day, unified election day could encourage higher voter turn out.
Reduced Political Polarization : Frequent elections in India often keep the political environmental highly charged, fostering continue competition among parties and creating an atmosphere of rivalry. This can polarize communities along philosophical, religous or regional lines. By adopting One Nation One Election. The election cycle would be consolidated, leading to periods of political stability between elections.
How can reduce political , polarization loss frequent campaigning, focus governance, unified national and regional agends, reduced media sensatiolism stability in society.
Improved Governance : Under the active system, governments often adopt short term populist policies to win elections. With One Nation One Election elected representatives could focus on long term governance without the distraction of imminent elections.
Time saving: Frequent elections take up a considerable amount of time for both administrative machinery and political parties. One Nation One Election would free up time for governance and reduce the constant cycle of campaigning.
Demerits One Nation One Election
Constitutional And Legal Amendments: Article 83 and 172 of indian Constitution govern the tenure of the Lok Saba and State Assemblies, respectively, One Nation one Election would require amendments to synchronize their terms.
Article 85 and 174 , which deal with the dissolution of the Lok Saba and state assemblies, would also need modification to align elections.
Article 356 president rule would need reconsideration in cases of early dissolution of state assemblies to ensure elections are held simultaneously.
Complexity Of Legal Framework : the representation of the people Act 1951 , which governs the conduct elections, would require revisions to establish a uniform election cycle.
Administrative Overload : Managing elections for 900 million voters in one go would put immense pressure on the Election Commission of India and other administrative bodies.
Premature Dissolution Of Assemblies :State assemblies may dissolve prematurely due to political instability. Synchronizing elections in such cases would be complex and might disrupt the one nation one election cycle.
Impact On Smaller Parties : One Nation One Election favor larger well established national parties, as smaller regional parties may struggle to complete in a single, centralized election process.
Logistical Complexity : India’s vas geographical and demographic diversity makes organizing simultaneous elections a daunting task. Ensuring the availability of Sufficient EVMs, security personal and administrative staff on a single day would be a logistical challenge.
Security Concerns : Ensuring the safety and security of voters, polling stations, and the election process in every corner of the country require massive development of security forces.
Shortage Of Election Personnel : Millions of polling officials are required to manage elections. Recruiting, training and deploying such a large worth force simultaneously would be extremely difficult.
Conclusion
One Nation One Election is an ambitious reform that seeks to simplify India’s electoral process, same resources, and enhance governance. By reducing the frequency of elections . It aims to minimize disruption in public life, lower costs, and allow governments to focus more on long term policies rather than short term populism. However, this reform comes with significant challenges, includes constitutional amendments logistical hurdles and the risk of undermining regional priorities.
While this idea is attractive theory its practical implementation requires a balanced approach. Extensive consultations with political parties, legal experts and civil society are essential to ensure inclusivity and consensus.
The success One Nation One Election depends on its ability to uphold the integrity of India’s democracy while making the electoral process more efficient and less disruptive. A phased approach, coupled with rigorous planning and public debate, could help achieve this ambitious goal.
