Srinagar, February 1, 2025 – In a significant development aimed at fostering unity and reconciliation, Dr. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has reiterated that Kashmir remains incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits. Addressing a gathering, the prominent religious and political leader underscored the shared suffering of both Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits over the past decades.
Acknowledging Historical Pain
Dr. Mirwaiz acknowledged the painful exodus of Kashmiri Pandits in 1989-90, calling it a deep humanitarian crisis that continues to impact both communities. “The suffering of Kashmiri Pandits needs to be addressed earnestly, and this has been a point I have raised repeatedly in my discourses,” he stated.
Recognizing the tragic displacement of thousands of Pandit families, he emphasized the need to restore Kashmir’s composite culture, ensuring that future generations understand the region’s rich history of coexistence.
Proposal for Inter-Community Committee
In a major step towards bridging the communal divide, Dr. Mirwaiz proposed the formation of an Inter-Community Committee to facilitate dialogue between Kashmiri Muslims and Pandits. The initiative aims to address grievances, build trust, and create a roadmap for the return of Kashmiri Pandits to their homeland.
“The wounds of the past must be healed with sincerity. It is our collective responsibility to make Kashmir a place where every community feels safe and valued,” he asserted.
Pandit Delegation Speaks on Suffering
A delegation of Kashmiri Pandits, present at the gathering, shared their emotional experiences of exile. They spoke of the immense hardships they endured—losing homes, selling property for survival, battling extreme weather, and struggling to educate their children in an unfamiliar world.
“We were forced out for no fault of ours,” one member of the delegation lamented, recalling the challenges of displacement. Many Pandits faced scorching heat, snake bites, and the trauma of being uprooted from their ancestral land.
Hope for Reconciliation
The discussion marked a crucial step towards reconciliation, with both communities recognizing the need for collective healing and mutual understanding. While challenges remain, initiatives like the proposed Inter-Community Committee could play a pivotal role in rebuilding lost trust.
Dr. Mirwaiz’s remarks and the dialogue between the two communities have sparked fresh hope for a future where Kashmiri Pandits can return to their homeland with dignity and security.
