U.S. Government Urges Supreme Court to Reject Tahawwur Rana’s Plea in Mumbai Terror Attack Case
In a significant development in the Mumbai terror attack case, the United States government has urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the petition for a writ of certiorari filed by Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, seeking to block his extradition to India. The move represents the latest step in a long-running legal battle surrounding Rana’s alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which claimed 166 lives.
U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar, in her filing before the Supreme Court, firmly stated, “The petition for a writ of certiorari should be denied.” The filing follows a series of legal defeats for Rana, including rulings by lower courts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco, all of which upheld the decision to extradite him.
Rana, who is accused by Indian authorities of aiding and abetting the attackers, filed his petition with the Supreme Court on November 13, marking what could be his final attempt to avoid extradition. India has been actively seeking his extradition, citing his alleged links to the Pakistan-based terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, which orchestrated the attacks.
The case has drawn considerable attention due to its international implications and the gravity of the charges. Indian authorities allege that Rana played a crucial role in facilitating the attackers, using his immigration consultancy business as a cover. His co-conspirator, David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American, was convicted in the U.S. and provided critical testimony implicating Rana.
Legal experts note that the Supreme Court rarely grants petitions for writs of certiorari, and the U.S. government’s strong opposition further diminishes Rana’s chances of success. If the Supreme Court denies the petition, Rana’s extradition to India would move forward, marking a significant step in holding those responsible for the Mumbai attacks accountable.
This case underscores the collaborative efforts between the U.S. and India to combat terrorism and deliver justice for the victims of one of the most devastating terror attacks in recent history. The world now awaits the Supreme Court’s decision, which will determine whether Rana will face trial in India or remain shielded under the U.S. legal system.
