New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, one of India’s most respected leaders and a pioneer of economic reform, passed away late on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was 92.
Dr. Singh, who served as the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, had been admitted to the hospital earlier this week due to health complications. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he breathed his last surrounded by family and close aides.
Known for his humility, intellect, and steady leadership, Dr. Singh played a pivotal role in shaping India’s modern economic landscape. As Finance Minister in the early 1990s, he was the architect of economic liberalization, which transformed India into a global economic power.
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), Dr. Manmohan Singh rose from humble beginnings to become an eminent economist and statesman. He studied at Cambridge and Oxford, later serving in various key roles, including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Chief Economic Advisor, before entering politics.
During his tenure as Prime Minister, he led the country through significant challenges, including the global financial crisis of 2008, and oversaw landmark initiatives like the Right to Education Act, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, and the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement.
Condolences poured in from across the globe as leaders, dignitaries, and citizens paid tribute to the visionary leader. President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their grief, highlighting his contribution to the nation and his commitment to public service.
“He was a statesman who left an indelible mark on India’s history. His dedication to the country will always be remembered,” Prime Minister Modi stated.
The Congress party, under which Dr. Singh served as Prime Minister, described his passing as an irreparable loss. “India has lost a true patriot, a visionary, and a humble leader,” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said in his statement.
Dr. Singh is survived by his wife, Gursharan Kaur, and three daughters. His funeral is expected to take place in New Delhi, with state honors, and will be attended by leaders from across the political spectrum and beyond.
